Atomic V-8 / Fusion Cores
Technology & Robotics · Source: Fallout 4, Fallout 2, Fallout 76
Overview
Atomic power technology is the backbone of the pre-war world, from fusion-powered automobiles to the compact fusion cores that energize power armor. These energy sources define the postwar landscape, literally and figuratively.
History & Development
American industry embraced atomic power in the decades before the war, with the Corvega Atomic V-8 engine becoming a symbol of the fusion-car era. Fusion cores, compact high-output cells, were developed to power heavy equipment and eventually became the standard fuel for power armor in the Commonwealth. The scarcity of fresh cores drives much of the wasteland economy.
Technical Specifications
The Atomic V-8 is a fusion-based automobile engine producing immense torque from a tiny fuel cell, powering vehicles like the Corvega and the Highwayman. Fusion cores are roughly hand-sized cells with a finite output that drains under sustained load, especially while using power armor. Depleted cores are worthless, making salvaged cores a prized commodity.
Wasteland Usage & Variants
Wastelanders scavenge fusion cores from generators, abandoned robots, and military sites to keep power armor operational. The Corvega assembly plant in Lexington remains a landmark of the atomic car era. Some settlements jury-rig cores to run lighting and defenses.
Notable Appearances
Fusion cores are central to power armor gameplay in Fallout 4, and the Atomic V-8 is celebrated through Corvega lore, the Highwayman in Fallout 2, and Fallout 76's automotive content.
