Gifted

Overview

Gifted is a famously overpowered trait from the classic Fallout games that grants +1 to every SPECIAL attribute while imposing a steep penalty to skill point gains. It is a masterclass in how a well-designed trade-off can still be completely dominant.

History & Background

Gifted appeared in the original Fallout and Fallout 2, where it quickly became notorious among players for being mathematically superior to nearly every alternative. The trait's premise is that the character is naturally exceptional, gifted by birth with extraordinary potential across all attributes. Its design was intended to create a meaningful sacrifice, but the raw power of universal attribute bonuses made it a default pick for optimized characters.

Content & Format

With Gifted, the player receives +1 to all seven SPECIAL attributes, improving derived stats, skills, and combat performance across the board, while suffering a 10% penalty to skill points earned per level. The skill penalty can be offset by the attribute bonuses, which themselves raise many skills indirectly. In practice, Gifted outperforms most other traits even after the penalty is accounted for.

Wasteland Significance

Gifted embodies the classic games' philosophy of character building, where a single creation choice could define an entire playthrough. Its dominance became a talking point in the community and influenced how later games balanced traits and perks. The trait is also a testament to the era's less-refined, more permissive game design.

Notable Appearances

Gifted appears in Fallout and Fallout 2, and it is absent from Fallout: New Vegas despite that game's revival of the trait system. It remains a frequent subject of build discussions and is often cited in retrospectives of classic RPG design.
