Overview
West Tek was a pre-war research and development firm contracted by the U.S. government for advanced biological and weapons programs. It is most infamous as the developer of the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). West Tek facilities, including the Mariposa Military Base and the West Tek Research Center, became post-war sources of mutant plagues.
History & Pre-War Operations
West Tek's scientists, working under government contract, developed FEV as a potential bioweapon that could produce superhuman soldiers immune to radiation. The project, rooted in the Pan-Immunity Virion Project, was headquartered in California with a major facility at Mariposa. When the Great War struck, the military sealed Mariposa, and the virus escaped containment, dooming the surrounding region.
Products & Technology
Beyond FEV, West Tek conducted broad chemical and biological research, including radiation countermeasures and experimental medical compounds. Its research infrastructure included advanced laboratories, containment facilities, and secure data archives. The company's work was heavily classified and intertwined with the U.S. military.
Post-War Legacy
West Tek's FEV created the super mutants that ravaged the West Coast under the Master and the East Coast through Vault 87's strain. The Enclave continued West Tek's biological research lineage, and the Institute in the Commonwealth conducted its own FEV work. West Tek's ruined facilities remain hazardous, mutant-infested ruins in the wastes.
Notable Appearances
West Tek appears in Fallout (Mariposa), Fallout 3 (referenced Vault 87 FEV lineage), Fallout 4 (Institute FEV lore), and Fallout 76 (West Tek Research Center). The company's Mariposa and research facilities anchor some of the series' most important mutant origin stories.
