Overview
The Laser Rifle is the standard-issue energy weapon of the pre-war U.S. military, firing concentrated beams of coherent light. Its accuracy, reliability, and abundance make it the most common energy weapon in the wasteland.
History & Development
Laser weapons reached maturity in the decades before the war, with the AER9 series becoming the military standard. The Institute later developed its own sleek laser rifle designs, and the Brotherhood of Steel adopted and maintained large arsenals. Post-war, laser rifles are manufactured and repaired by several factions.
Technical Specifications
The rifle draws from fusion or microfusion cells to emit focused light beams with excellent range and precision. It is effective against most targets and can be modified with splitter, sniper, and automatic barrels. Its optics and targeting systems remain reliable centuries after production.
Wasteland Usage & Variants
Brotherhood patrols, Gunners, and raiders all carry laser rifles in the Commonwealth, while the Capital Wasteland's Enclave fielded advanced variants. The AER14 prototype and unique Righteous Authority are notable examples. Laser muskets represent a crude civilian adaptation of the technology.
Notable Appearances
Laser rifles are ubiquitous across Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76, from the Brotherhood's ranks to the Institute's armory.
