Experimental MIRV
Weapons & Gear · Source: Fallout 3, Fallout 4
Overview
The Experimental MIRV is a modified Fat Man launcher that fires a cluster of eight mini nukes in a single salvo. It is arguably the most overkill weapon ever built for a human to carry.
History & Development
The MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) concept was adapted from missile technology into a prototype man-portable launcher before the war. A surviving prototype was stored in the National Guard Depot in the Capital Wasteland. Its battlefield role remains a matter of speculation, as its firepower is as dangerous to the user as to the target.
Technical Specifications
The launcher fires eight mini nukes in a spread pattern, saturating a wide area with nuclear fire. It suffers from extreme recoil, slow cycling, and fragile mechanical parts, and its ammunition consumption is ruinous. Radiation and blast effects make it a weapon of last resort.
Wasteland Usage & Variants
Wasteland legends speak of the MIRV's destructive capability, and the Fallout 4 version appears as a modification for the standard Fat Man. It is a favorite of endgame demolitionists. Using it safely requires significant distance.
Notable Appearances
The Experimental MIRV appears in Fallout 3 as a unique weapon, and MIRV modifications return in Fallout 4.
