Overview
Galaxy News Radio, universally known as GNR, is the premier radio station of the Capital Wasteland in 2277, broadcasting from the Museum of Technology in the ruins of Washington, D.C. It is hosted by the charismatic and larger-than-life DJ Three Dog, whose gravel-voiced commentary and curated pre-War records make it the only full-service news and music station in the region.
History & Background
GNR was originally a pre-War commercial station, and its broadcast tower remained standing among the ruins of the Mall after the Great War. Three Dog, a self-proclaimed messenger of the wastes, took over the station's transmitter and turned it into his personal pulpit, using it to rally the people of the Capital Wasteland and report on the doings of wastelanders who capture his imagination. The station's fortunes change when the Lone Wanderer restores the dish on the roof of the GNR building, driving off the Super Mutants who had pinned down the station's defenders.
Content & Format
GNR's programming consists of classic pre-War swing and jazz records punctuated by Three Dog's energetic news bulletins, editorializing, and public-service announcements. Three Dog famously narrates the player character's actions across the wasteland, delivering color commentary on major quests and moral choices with his signature catchphrases. The station is also a mission hub, with Three Dog dispatching the Lone Wanderer to recover the Declaration of Independence and other artifacts for broadcast.
Wasteland Significance
GNR is the information backbone of the Capital Wasteland, shaping public opinion and giving isolated settlements a sense of shared community. Three Dog's broadcasts actively frame the Lone Wanderer's reputation, rewarding heroism with glowing tributes and condemning villainy, which makes the station a barometer of player morality. Its signal reach effectively defines the borders of civilization in the wastes.
Notable Appearances
GNR is central to the Fallout 3 main quest line, including the quest Galaxy News Radio and the subsequent mission to the Jefferson Memorial. Three Dog and the station are referenced across later games, and the GNR building appears in concept art and promotional material for Fallout 3's The Pitt and Broken Steel add-ons.
