Power Armor represents the pinnacle of pre-Great War American defense technology, primarily developed by West-Tek. Conceived during the escalating Sino-American War, the project began in 2065 with the aim of transforming individual infantrymen into highly mobile, heavily armored units capable of carrying formidable weaponry. These suits provide exceptional protection against small arms fire, trauma, and radiation, effectively turning a soldier into a walking tank, capable of operating in environments inaccessible to traditional combat vehicles.
Functionally, Power Armor operates more like a personal vehicle than a conventional suit of armor, with the wearer climbing into an articulated exoskeleton. The core of its design includes an internalized servomotor system and advanced hydraulic shock absorption, allowing for enhanced strength and resilience. The first successful series, the T-45, was deployed in 2067. Powering these formidable suits are fusion cores, a standardized nuclear battery technology developed in 2066 for both military and civilian applications. These cores provide the necessary energy for the suit's various functions, though their operational lifespan has been depicted differently across various accounts.
The technology saw rapid evolution, with the T-51 series, fielded by 2076, being considered the most advanced operational power armor before the Great War. Experimental X-01 prototypes were also in development by 2077, laying the groundwork for post-War designs. Following the Great War, Power Armor became an incredibly valuable and sought-after asset in the wasteland, primarily utilized and hoarded by technologically-focused factions such as the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave. However, scavenged, repaired, and often crudely modified versions are also employed by various other groups, including raiders and the New California Republic, demonstrating the enduring impact and adaptability of this pre-War marvel.
