Transponder/Teleporter (Institute Molecular Relay)
Technology & Robotics · Source: Fallout 4
Overview
The Molecular Relay is the Institute's teleportation system, capable of scanning a person's molecular structure and reassembling them at a destination. It is the Institute's primary method of moving people and supplies between its underground headquarters and the surface.
History & Development
Institute scientists spent years perfecting matter transmission, eventually solving the stability problems that plagued earlier prototypes. The relay requires a transponder signal to lock onto the target, which is how Coursers and Gen 3 synths are inserted into the Commonwealth. The Sole Survivor is first teleported into the Institute after procuring a working transponder.
Technical Specifications
The relay scans, transmits, and reassembles matter through a controlled energy field, a process that is disorienting and temporarily incapacitating. Range is effectively limited to the Commonwealth region, and the system demands enormous power from the Institute's reactor. The Institute's main relay chamber can only be accessed via signal authorization.
Wasteland Usage & Variants
The Institute uses the relay to retrieve and deploy agents, while the Railroad and Minutemen later exploit it to infiltrate the Institute. The teleportation process is central to the quest to place a Courser chip and ultimately to deciding the Commonwealth's fate.
Notable Appearances
The Molecular Relay is central to Fallout 4's main questline, including the missions Institutionalized and the final assault on the Institute.
