Nick Valentine is a unique prototype synth, designated as a Generation 2.5 model, created by the Institute over a century before the events of Fallout 4. He was designed to test the implantation of artificial personalities based on pre-War human memory recordings, receiving the memories and personality of a pre-War police detective named Nick Valentine. Deemed a failure by the Institute, he was discarded and left to wander the Commonwealth. During his early post-creation existence, he escaped the Institute alongside another prototype synth, DiMA, though he later lost the memories of this encounter due to his limited prototype memory capacity.
After regaining consciousness and wandering the wasteland, Nick eventually found his way to Diamond City. Initially met with suspicion due to his synthetic nature, he earned the trust and respect of the townspeople by rescuing the then-mayor's kidnapped daughter. This act of heroism led to him being offered a place in the city, where he subsequently established the Valentine Detective Agency. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled private investigator, specializing in missing persons cases and other mysteries that the local authorities couldn't or wouldn't handle.
In 2287, Nick Valentine becomes a pivotal companion to the Sole Survivor in Fallout 4, assisting in the search for their abducted son, Shaun. Throughout their travels, Nick grapples with his own identity, questioning whether he is merely a machine mimicking a dead man or a unique individual forged by his experiences and the implanted memories. His personal quest involves hunting down Eddie Winter, a pre-War mob boss responsible for the death of the original Nick Valentine's fiancée, seeking a form of justice that transcends his synthetic existence. He also plays a significant role in the Far Harbor add-on, further exploring his past connection with DiMA.
