Ulysses

Characters & NPCs · Source: Fallout: New Vegas — Lonesome Road add-on dialogue and holotapes

Overview

SUBJECT: Ulysses, former Frumentarius of Caesar's Legion, operative designation withdrawn circa 2277. Currently operating independently in the Divide, a storm-wracked canyon region on the Mojave's eastern border. Primary threat classification: strategic. The subject is the last known individual to fully comprehend the Old World weapon systems dormant beneath the Divide.

History & Background

Orphaned in Arizona and raised within the Legion's ranks, the subject rose to the position of Frumentarius, the Legion's intelligence arm. Dispatched east to scout the approaches to the Colorado River, the subject discovered the Divide and the pre-war missile silos buried beneath it, and came to respect the communities that had settled there. The Courier's 2281 delivery run through the Divide detonated the region's warheads, annihilating those communities and the people the subject had chosen to protect, generating a personal vendetta against the Courier.

Personality & Traits

Behavioral profile: obsessive, messianic, and intellectually formidable. The subject speaks in cryptic aphorisms and frames the conflict between the NCR and the Legion as the 'Bear and Bull.' Carries a copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and reads Old World history as a moral text. Regards the Courier as both an enemy and a necessary counterpart in his design.

Role in the Wasteland

Plans to use the Divide's remaining missiles to destroy both the NCR and the Legion, resetting the wasteland's power structure. Manipulates both factions into the Divide to serve as targets for the launch. The Courier may defeat the subject in combat, dissuade him through dialogue, or allow him to walk away with his arsenal intact.

Notable Appearances

Fallout: New Vegas — Lonesome Road add-on (2011), primary antagonist and final confrontation. The subject's legend is referenced obliquely in base-game Legion dialogue regarding a courier who went missing in the East.
