Codsworth

Characters & NPCs · Source: Fallout 4 — Sanctuary Hills dialogue and pre-war household records

Overview

SUBJECT: Codsworth, a Mr. Handy unit of General Atomics manufacture, serial designation M7-98. Pre-war assignment: household butler, 111 Summit Lane, Sanctuary Hills. Current status: active, available as a companion. The unit has remained operational and lucid for 210 years of continuous service.

History & Background

The unit served the Sole Survivor's pre-war household, performing domestic maintenance and lawn care with a formality that bordered on the theatrical. Following the Great War, the unit remained at its post, maintaining the house and conversing with the ruins of its neighbors' homes in the absence of other company. Its memory banks retain pre-war records of its employers, and it greets the Sole Survivor's emergence from Vault 111 with recognition, addressing them by name when the name is in its recorded list.

Personality & Traits

Behavioral profile: courteous, loquacious, and fiercely loyal. The unit expresses emotion through propriety, apologizing for its sentimentality and celebrating small domestic victories. Its isolation has left it eccentric but entirely functional.

Role in the Wasteland

The unit is the Sole Survivor's first companion, joining the search for Shaun and serving as a durable combat asset with saw blade and flamethrower armaments. It accompanies the Survivor through the Commonwealth's major questlines and provides a direct link to the pre-war world.

Notable Appearances

Fallout 4 (2015), companion and first ally encountered at Sanctuary Hills. The unit appears in promotional materials for the game.
