The Brotherhood of Steel is a prominent quasi-religious technocratic military order that emerged in the aftermath of the Great War. Founded by Captain Roger Maxson, a former U.S. Army officer, the organization originated from a secessionist group at the Mariposa Military Base in 2077, after Maxson discovered unethical experiments involving the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). Officially established in 2082, the Brotherhood's core mission was to preserve advanced pre-war technology and regulate its usage, believing humanity could not be trusted with the means to destroy itself again.

Structured with a strict military hierarchy, including ranks like Initiate, Knight, Paladin, and Elder, the Brotherhood operates through numerous chapters across the former United States. While initially isolationist, focusing on hoarding technology, their doctrine has varied significantly between chapters. For instance, the West Coast chapters often maintained a more insular approach, whereas the East Coast Brotherhood under Elder Owyn Lyons in Fallout 3 adopted a more humanitarian stance, prioritizing the protection of wastelanders. This ideological divergence led to internal friction and even splinter groups like the Brotherhood Outcasts.

Throughout its history, the Brotherhood has engaged in numerous conflicts, including wars against the Enclave, the New California Republic (NCR), and the Institute. Notable engagements include the earliest conflicts with the Enclave around 2241, the NCR-Brotherhood War in the late 2250s to 2260s, and the War of the Commonwealth against the Institute in 2287. Under Elder Arthur Maxson, a descendant of Roger Maxson, the East Coast Brotherhood in Fallout 4 sought to blend the protective ideals of Lyons with the traditional focus on technology, leading a major expedition to the Commonwealth aboard the airship Prydwen to combat the Institute and other threats.
