Fall of Shady Sands

Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout TV series (2024), Season 1; Vault-Tec promotional timeline

Overview

The Fall of Shady Sands was the nuclear destruction of the New California Republic's capital city, a catastrophe that shattered the NCR's government and threw California into chaos. The strike is attributed to Vault-Tec, and the event is central to the Fallout television series.

History & Background

Shady Sands was founded in 2097 by survivors of Vault 15 and grew into the first major city of the post-war world, eventually becoming the capital of the NCR. Over nearly two centuries it became the symbol of civilization's rebirth. Behind the scenes, Vault-Tec's corporate heirs — including figures tied to Vault 31 and the MacLean family — had long planned to reassert control over the wasteland, and Shady Sands stood in their way.

Details & Timeline

2097: Shady Sands is founded. 2186-2241: the town grows into the NCR's capital. By 2281 it remains the seat of the NCR, still thriving in the era of Fallout: New Vegas. At some point in the decades that follow, a nuclear bomb — implied to be a Vault-Tec strike — levels the city, leaving a massive crater. The NCR's government collapses, its territories fracture, and survivors such as Lee Moldaver's group carry on the fight against Vault-Tec. Hank MacLean's flight from Vault 31 and the events of the TV series unfold against this ruined backdrop.

Wasteland Significance

The fall of Shady Sands erased the NCR's political center and demonstrated that even the strongest post-war nation could be destroyed in an instant. It reshaped the balance of power across the West Coast, and the show's timeline makes clear that California's future is contested ground between the NCR's remnants, Vault-Tec's survivors, and new powers rising from the ashes.
