The Capital Wasteland Purification

Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout 3 (2008) and Broken Steel DLC (2009)

Overview

The Capital Wasteland Purification was the 2277-2278 campaign to secure and distribute the clean water of Project Purity across the ruined D.C. region, culminating in the destruction of the Enclave's East Coast forces at Adams Air Force Base.

History & Background

After the Lone Wanderer activated the purifier, the Enclave struck back, sabotaging the water supply and attacking the Brotherhood's Citadel. The Brotherhood's war with the Enclave entered its endgame: to protect the wasteland's water, the Brotherhood would have to destroy the Enclave's last stronghold.

Details & Timeline

August 2277: Project Purity is activated; James sacrifices himself; the water begins to flow. 2277: the Enclave's remnants launch a counteroffensive — sabotaging the purifier and striking at the Brotherhood. 2278: the Brotherhood counterattacks with Liberty Prime, storms Adams Air Force Base, destroys the mobile base crawler, and kills the Enclave leadership. The purifier is repaired and restored, and clean water spreads across the wasteland, with the player choosing whether it carries modified FEV.

Wasteland Significance

The purification campaign gave the Capital Wasteland its first functional infrastructure since the war, turning the region's rivers into a lifeline and the Brotherhood into its guardian. It also broke the Enclave's East Coast power for good, ending the last organized remnant of the pre-war American government east of the Mississippi.

Notable Appearances

Fallout 3 (2008) and the Broken Steel DLC (2009), including the assault on Adams Air Force Base, Liberty Prime's march, and the purifier's final restoration.
