The Unity's Rise

Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout (1997); Fallout Bible

Overview

The Unity's Rise was the decades-long expansion of the Master's mutant empire from the 2150s to 2162, as the Master converted the super mutant army, the Children of the Cathedral cult, and the conquered settlements of Southern California into a single fanatical movement bent on remaking humanity.

History & Background

After Richard Grey's 2102 transformation into the Master at Mariposa, he spent decades studying the Forced Evolutionary Virus and building his power base. He created the Children of the Cathedral to spread his gospel in human society and slowly built an army of super mutants, waiting until he was strong enough to march.

Details & Timeline

2102: Grey becomes the Master at Mariposa. 2130s-2150s: the Children of the Cathedral cult grows in Los Angeles, while the Master perfects the mutant conversion process. 2150s: the Unity's military campaigns begin in earnest — the Boneyard and surrounding settlements fall or are cowed. 2161-2162: the mutant army raids across the region, stealing Vault 13's water chip and attacking the Brotherhood of Steel. 2162: the Vault Dweller's counterstrike destroys the Master, the Cathedral, and Mariposa, collapsing the Unity at its height.

Wasteland Significance

The Unity was the first great post-war empire and the template for every would-be conqueror that followed. Its rise showed how quickly the wasteland could be united under a single will — and its fall proved that such empires could be broken. The mutant threat and the Master's ideology haunted the West Coast for decades.
