Operation Anchorage

Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout 3: Operation Anchorage DLC (2008); in-game terminals and the Fallout Bible

Overview

Operation: Anchorage refers both to the final U.S. counteroffensive that drove the Chinese military out of Anchorage, Alaska in January 2077, and to the virtual-reality training simulation built from it that the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood of Steel chapter still runs in 2277.

History & Background

After China invaded Alaska in 2066 to secure its oil fields, the United States fought a bitter, years-long arctic war. Anchorage became the war's most important front. The U.S. military poured its best technology into the theater, including the T-51b power armor, the Gauss rifle, and experimental stealth and cryogenic gear. The campaign became a proving ground for weapons that would later define the wasteland.

Details & Timeline

2066: Chinese forces invade Alaska and seize Anchorage. 2066-2076: a grinding stalemate of arctic warfare, with the Chinese digging in and the U.S. preparing a decisive push. January 2077: Operation: Anchorage — the U.S. counteroffensive liberates the city, culminating in the deaths of Chinese General Jingwei and the destruction of the Chinese command. The victory came months before the Great War erased the world it was fought for. In 2277, the Brotherhood of Steel uses a simulation of the battle to train initiates, with the Lone Wanderer running the gauntlet and recovering the simulation's hidden armory.

Wasteland Significance

The battle established the legend of pre-war American military power that the Brotherhood of Steel still draws on. The 2277 simulation handed the Lone Wanderer winterized T-51b power armor, a Gauss rifle, and other unique gear, making it one of the most rewarding recoveries in the Capital Wasteland. The Alaska theater's hardware and doctrine also shaped post-war military factions across the continent.

Notable Appearances

Fallout 3's Operation: Anchorage DLC (2008) depicts the simulation; the real battle is referenced in in-game terminals, the Fallout Bible, and Fallout 4 lore, including the Chinese remnant soldier at the Anchorage Memorial and references to the T-51b's deployment in Alaska.
