Mongrels — also referred to as wild dogs or feral canines — are mutated descendants of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) that survived the Great War and rapidly reverted to a feral state. Unlike the carefully bred companion dogs maintained by some wasteland communities, mongrels are lean, mangy, and often diseased, with patchy fur, visible tumors, and a gaunt, desperate appearance.
Mongrels typically hunt in packs of three to eight individuals, using coordinated flanking tactics that make them more dangerous than their individual capabilities would suggest. A single mongrel is manageable for even a moderately armed wastelander; a pack that has surrounded its prey is a lethal threat, with individuals attacking from multiple angles while others harry from the front. Their bite can transmit a variety of wasteland diseases, including a mutated form of rabies that induces heightened aggression.
Mongrel meat is considered low-quality fare — stringy, tough, and often carrying disease — but it is edible when thoroughly cooked. Their hides have minimal value. Mongrels are found throughout the post-war United States, particularly near ruined urban areas where they can scavenge through garbage and debris. Some wasteland settlements maintain a standing bounty on mongrel pelts as a pest control measure. The Alpha Mongrel, a larger, more aggressive pack leader with a distinctive pale or melanistic coat, presents a tactical priority in any engagement: killing the alpha may cause the pack to scatter.
