Snallygaster
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76
The Snallygaster is one of the most bizarre cryptid-type creatures of the Appalachian wasteland — a horrifying fusion of reptilian, amphibian, and arthropod characteristics that appears almost deliberately designed to violate taxonomic convention. Named after a creature from Maryland folklore (a dragon-like beast said to prey on livestock), the post-war snallygaster is a documented biological reality that has proven the pre-war legends disturbingly prescient.
A snallygaster's body is dominated by a cluster of multiple eye-stalks protruding from a bulbous head, giving it nearly 360-degree visual coverage. Its body is a twisted, hunched mass of leathery gray-green flesh, supported by powerful hind legs and smaller, grasping forelimbs. Most distinctive are the cluster of prehensile, lamprey-like 'tongues' or tentacles that extend from its face — these appendages can strike at range and latch onto prey, delivering a toxic secretion that induces rapid tissue necrosis.
Snallygasters are believed to be a product of FEV experimentation, possibly originating from the West-Tek research facility in Huntersville. The creatures exhibit a combination of traits that suggests deliberate genetic synthesis rather than random mutation — their visual acuity, toxic attacks, and physical capabilities appear complementary rather than the chaotic product of radiation. They are solitary hunters, typically found in forested and mountainous terrain, and their toxic glands are valued by wasteland chemists for crafting potent poisons and combat chems. The Toxic Snallygaster variant produces an even more concentrated toxin that can be harvested for high-grade applications.
