Honey Beast

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76

Honey beasts are mutated insectoid creatures that represent a disturbing fusion of bee and bear characteristics, found primarily in the Appalachian region. These creatures appear to be the result of radiation-induced hybridization — or possibly FEV experimentation — combining the anatomy of a mutated honeybee with the scale and aggression of a bear, producing something that is less than either and more terrifying than both.

A honey beast's body is a mass of chitinous plates, bristly hair, and swollen, honey-producing glands, supported by six insectoid legs but with a bulk comparable to a small bear. Their heads are dominated by compound eyes and powerful mandibles, with antennae that provide acute sensory awareness. The name derives from the creature's honey production — specialized glands throughout their body produce a golden, viscous substance that is similar to bee honey but with distinct chemical properties.

Honey beasts are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their hives, which they construct from a papery, wax-like secretion reinforced with scavenged materials. Their primary attack is a combination of mandible strikes and stinger thrusts from their abdomen. They are also capable of summoning swarms of smaller insect minions — possibly mutated bees or offspring — to harass targets. Honey beast honey is a valuable commodity in Appalachia, used both as a food source and as a component in various chem recipes, though harvesting it is obviously hazardous. The creature's hive-building behavior suggests a complex social structure, though solitary honey beasts are most commonly encountered.
