Lakelurk

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout: New Vegas

Lakelurks are a species of mutated aquatic predators found primarily in the Mojave Wasteland's waterways, notably around Lake Mead and the Colorado River basin. Despite sharing a naming convention with mirelurks, lakelurks represent a distinct evolutionary lineage — they are believed to be descended from mutated common snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina), transformed by radiation into bipedal, fast-moving predators that stand approximately five to six feet tall.

A lakelurk's most distinctive feature is its shell, which has evolved from a defensive structure into an aggressive weapon: lakelurks can launch themselves at targets with surprising speed, using their hardened carapace as a battering ram. Their beaked mouths deliver crushing bites capable of severing limbs, and their clawed forelimbs are effective for both locomotion and combat. Lakelurks are amphibious, capable of moving rapidly in water and on land, and will drag prey into the water to drown it if given the opportunity.

Lakelurk meat is described as having a texture similar to turtle meat but with a distinctly irradiated aftertaste that some find addictive. Their shells can be harvested and worked into exceptionally durable armor plates, highly prized by wasteland craftsmen. Lakelurks are notably more solitary than mirelurks, typically encountered alone or in mated pairs rather than in large colonies. They favor underwater caves and submerged ruins as lairs, making them a persistent threat to anyone relying on waterways for travel or fishing in the Mojave region.
