Grafton Monster

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76

The Grafton Monster is a massive, headless-seeming humanoid cryptid that stalks the region around Grafton, West Virginia, in the Appalachian wasteland. Like the pre-war urban legend from which it takes its name (a large, headless creature reportedly sighted near Grafton in 1964), the post-war Grafton Monster is an unnervingly large biped that appears to lack a distinct head — its sensory organs and feeding apparatus are integrated directly into its massive upper torso.

The Grafton Monster stands approximately twelve to fifteen feet tall, with disproportionately long arms that drag along the ground when it walks. Its body is a mottled gray-white, with thick, rubbery hide that provides substantial damage resistance. The chest and abdominal cavity appear bloated, possibly filled with digestive organs or toxic byproducts that the creature can expel as a projectile attack — Grafton Monsters are known to vomit caustic, tar-like substance at threats, which clings to surfaces and continues causing chemical damage over time.

Scholars of Appalachian cryptozoology debate whether the Grafton Monster is a pre-war creature that the original 1964 sighting documented accurately, a post-war mutation of an unknown baseline species, or the product of FEV experimentation. The presence of hunting notices and bounties posted by the Grafton community suggests the creature has been a persistent local threat since shortly after the Great War. Grafton Monster tissue samples are of interest to researchers studying the relationship between post-war mutations and pre-war folklore, though the practical dangers of obtaining such samples limit scholarly access.
