Trog
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 3: The Pitt
Trogs are degenerate, troglodytic humanoids indigenous to The Pitt — the irradiated industrial ruins of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Unlike ghouls, who are created by acute radiation exposure, trogs appear to be the result of generational radiation and chemical exposure combined with extreme environmental deprivation. They are humans who have undergone a distinct evolutionary regression into a subterranean, predatory existence.
Physically, trogs are immediately recognizable by their complete hairlessness, pale and translucent skin (through which musculature and blood vessels are partially visible), elongated limbs, and hunched posture. Their eyes have atrophied or been lost entirely, replaced by a form of echolocation or vibration-based sensory perception that allows them to navigate the pitch-black industrial ruins they inhabit. They move on all fours with unsettling speed, scrambling across walls and ceilings with preternatural agility.
Trogs are instinctively hostile to surface-dwelling humans, viewing them as both threats and prey. Their attacks are fast, feral, and overwhelming — they swarm targets, using their numbers to bring down even heavily armed opponents. Their bite carries a high risk of infection due to the toxic environment they inhabit, and their claws are capable of puncturing light to medium armor. Trog communities appear to have a rudimentary social hierarchy, with larger, more aggressive individuals assuming dominance positions.
The origin of trogs is tied to The Pitt's unique environmental conditions: a century of industrial pollution predating the Great War, combined with post-war radiation from the nuclear bombardment and the region's unique atmospheric conditions, created a mutagenic environment that few other regions can match. Trogs are a grim reminder that ghoulification is not the only pathway for human degradation in the wasteland — and perhaps not the worst.
