Hermit Crab

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4: Far Harbor

Hermit crabs are a remarkable example of adaptive post-war evolution — mutated descendants of the common marine hermit crab (superfamily Paguroidea) that have retained and dramatically scaled up their ancestral behavior of inhabiting found objects as protective shells. In the post-apocalyptic world, this means hermit crabs do not use seashells — they use abandoned vehicles.

An adult hermit crab selects a derelict vehicle — most commonly a van or small truck — and secures it to its soft, vulnerable abdomen, treating the vehicle's frame as a mobile fortress. When threatened, the crab retreats into the vehicle shell, presenting attackers with a layer of automotive steel before the creature's actual body can be reached. This adaptation is both clever and horrifying: from a distance, the hermit crab appears to be an abandoned vehicle; up close, the scuttling insectoid legs protruding from beneath the chassis and the crustacean appendages emerging from where the engine block once sat reveal the truth.

Hermit crabs are found in coastal regions, particularly around the Island (Mount Desert Island, Maine) and other New England shorelines where derelict vehicles are common. Their primary attack involves emerging from their vehicle shell to strike with powerful claws, then retreating when injured. The vehicle shell must be destroyed or sufficiently damaged before the crab itself becomes vulnerable — a tactical consideration that makes these creatures more resource-intensive to eliminate than their individual threat level would suggest. Hermit crab meat, once the creature is extracted from its vehicle shell, is considered a delicacy by coastal wasteland communities, described as having a flavor similar to pre-war crab but richer and more complex.
