Hairy Deathclaw Mutation
Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout 2 in-game lore
Overview
Hairy deathclaws are a variant of the standard deathclaw covered in thick fur, observed in the wastelands of the West Coast. The fur is believed to be a post-war mutation adapting the creatures to colder climates. They share the fearsome traits of all deathclaws.
Origin & Mechanism
Deathclaws were engineered pre-war as military weapons, but the hairy variant emerged after the war through natural mutation. The fur likely developed as an adaptation to colder environments, such as the northern wastes. The mutation spread through deathclaw populations over generations.
Effects & Symptoms
Hairy deathclaws retain the size, claws, and aggression of standard deathclaws, with the addition of a dense fur coat. They are otherwise behaviorally identical, equally lethal in close combat. The fur provides insulation and some protection.
Wasteland Significance
The hairy deathclaw demonstrates the deathclaw's adaptability and its status as one of the wasteland's apex predators. Encounters with hairy deathclaws are rare but deadly. Their existence supports theories of rapid post-war evolution.
Notable Appearances
Hairy deathclaws appear in Fallout 2. The variant is sometimes encountered alongside standard deathclaw packs.
