Scorched
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76
The Scorched are not a creature species in the traditional sense but rather a condition — humans, ghouls, and even animals that have been infected by the Scorched Plague, a fungal-like pathogen endemic to the Appalachian region that connects infected individuals into a semi-hive-mind network presumably controlled by the scorchbeasts. The name derives from the characteristic scorched, crystalline growths that emerge through the infected's skin, giving them the appearance of being partially petrified or burned from within.
An infected Scorched retains much of its pre-infection capabilities — humans still wield weapons, operate machinery, and demonstrate tactical awareness — but these capabilities are now directed by the plague's collective intelligence rather than individual volition. The Scorched are not mindless; they communicate through the plague network, coordinate attacks, and adapt tactics based on the experience of any member of the collective. This distributed intelligence makes Scorched encounters fundamentally different from engagements with feral ghouls or other mindless creatures.
The infection process appears irreversible once the crystalline growths manifest, though early-stage infection may be treatable. The Scorched Plague is transmitted through airborne spores, direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated environments, and possibly through scorchbeast attacks. The plague's origin is linked to the Ultracite mineral deposits unique to Appalachia — a radioactive crystal formation that emerged following the region's nuclear bombardment and appears to have synergistic properties with the plague organism.
Scorched populations are concentrated in Appalachia, with the highest densities around fissure sites — locations where ultracite deposits breach the surface and where scorchbeasts are most active. The Scorched pose a unique threat not just through their individual danger but through the plague's potential to spread: a single infected individual reaching an unexposed settlement could trigger a catastrophic outbreak.
