Angler
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4: Far Harbor
Anglers are among the most cunning and specialized predators of the post-war swamps and coastal marshlands, indigenous to the Island (Mount Desert Island, Maine) and, in smaller populations, the Appalachian region. These mutated amphibious creatures have evolved a remarkable hunting strategy inspired by — but far more sophisticated than — that of the pre-war deep-sea anglerfish (order Lophiiformes). Their name derives from this hunting technique.
An angler's most distinctive adaptation is a bioluminescent lure — a fleshy, glowing appendage that extends from its forehead and mimics the appearance of a desirable food source or object. By remaining partially submerged in murky water with only this lure visible, anglers attract wasteland creatures and unwary travelers who approach what appears to be a glowing item of value, only to be ambushed. This behavioral mimicry represents a sophisticated evolutionary adaptation to the presence of scavenging human populations.
When prey approaches, the angler erupts from concealment with surprising speed, attacking with powerful clawed forelimbs and a wide, tooth-filled mouth capable of swallowing smaller creatures whole. Angler hide is dense and rubbery, providing moderate ballistic protection, and they are resistant to radiation damage. Angler meat is described as having a distinctly 'swampy' flavor profile — an acquired taste — and their lure glands can be harvested for use in chem recipes, particularly those involving chemical attraction or luring effects.
