Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV)

Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout series in-game lore, West Tek and Enclave terminal entries

Overview

The Forced Evolutionary Virus, or FEV, is a genetically engineered retrovirus developed pre-war by West Tek as a bioweapon. It forcibly rewrites an organism's DNA to accelerate evolution, creating superhuman mutants. FEV is the origin of super mutants and many of the wasteland's strangest creatures.

Origin & Mechanism

FEV was developed at West Tek facilities under U.S. government contract, descended from the Pan-Immunity Virion Project's research into a universal cure. The virus bonds with host DNA and restructures it, with results dependent on the host species, the viral strain, and the exposure method. It was designed to create soldiers immune to radiation, but its effects were wildly unpredictable.

Effects & Symptoms

In humans, FEV causes dramatic increases in size, strength, and radiation resistance, along with green or discolored skin and often reduced intelligence. Most infected humans become sterile and develop a shortened temper and simplified speech. Exposure can also produce fatal mutations, and the virus lingers in the environment, contaminating water and soil.

Wasteland Significance

FEV is the foundational threat of the wasteland's mutant ecology, responsible for super mutants from the Master's army to Vault 87's hordes. The Enclave continued FEV research for its genocidal plans, and the Institute used it in synthetic human research. Understanding FEV became central to post-war science across the country.

Notable Appearances

FEV appears in Fallout (Mariposa), Fallout 2 (Enclave research), Fallout 3 (Vault 87), Fallout 4 (the Institute), and Fallout 76 (West Tek). Its legacy also extends to the Enclave's bioweapons program and the Institute's synth research.
