Mirelurk Spawn

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4, Fallout 76

Mirelurk spawn represent the juvenile or 'hatchling' stage of the mirelurk life cycle — small, pale crustaceans typically measuring eight to fourteen inches across, which emerge from mirelurk eggs in large numbers. Though individually fragile, their strength lies in overwhelming numbers and their tendency to swarm targets in defense of the nest.

Freshly hatched mirelurk spawn have soft, pale exoskeletons that harden and darken as they mature. They are functionally miniature versions of standard mirelurks, possessing claws, legs, and feeding apparatus in proportionally accurate but small-scale form. A single clutch can produce dozens of spawn, and their collective attack can strip flesh from bone with alarming speed.

Mirelurk spawn are most commonly encountered when disturbing mirelurk egg clutches — the act of approaching or damaging eggs triggers a swarm response from nearby spawn, who erupt from the nest and surrounding water to defend their brood. The Mirelurk Queen will produce and release spawn continuously during combat encounters, using them to harry and distract attackers while she employs her heavier attacks.

Mirelurk spawn are too small to provide meaningful quantities of meat, though they can be harvested for chitin fragments and other minor crafting materials. Their primary significance is tactical: in any engagement involving a mirelurk colony, particularly one with an active queen, spawn management is essential to prevent being overwhelmed by numbers.

Mirelurk eggs — the pre-hatching stage — are a highly valued food source, and harvesting them is a specialized skill that requires navigating the defensive response of both the queen and her spawn. Softshell Mirelurk represents an intermediate juvenile stage between spawn and full adult, characterized by a still-softening carapace that makes them more vulnerable to attack but also yields higher-quality meat.
