Brahmin

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76

Brahmin are the premier domesticated livestock animal of the post-apocalyptic wasteland — two-headed cattle descended from pre-war Bos taurus stock that underwent mutation from widespread radiation exposure. The name derives from the sacred cattle of Hindu tradition, though its adoption in the American wasteland appears to be a corruption or folk etymology rather than a direct cultural reference.

The brahmin's most distinctive feature is its two heads, each apparently capable of independent function — both will graze, drink, and vocalize separately, though they share a single digestive system and circulatory network. This polycephaly has proven evolutionarily advantageous rather than detrimental; brahmin possess enhanced sensory awareness, making them harder to ambush than their single-headed ancestors, and both heads contribute to the animal's ability to locate food and water in the harsh wasteland environment.

Brahmin serve multiple critical roles in wasteland society: as beasts of burden pulling caravans across the wastes, as sources of meat and milk (described as having a peculiar but palatable flavor), and as providers of hide for leather goods. Brahmin dung is also a component in certain chem recipes and, in its dried form, a rudimentary fuel source. Brahmin barons — wealthy caravan owners who control large herds — hold significant economic power, particularly in the New California Republic. Brahmin are preyed upon by virtually all wasteland predators, their slow movement and docile temperament making them easy targets if not properly guarded.
