Wolf

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76

Mutated wolves are descended from pre-war Canis lupus populations that survived the nuclear holocaust of 2077 and adapted to the irradiated landscape. Unlike mongrels — which descend from domestic dogs — these wolves retained their wild heritage but underwent significant physical changes including increased size (with some specimens reaching shoulder heights of four feet), patchy fur growth often interspersed with radiation burns and tumorous growths, and enhanced aggression toward human-sized targets.

Wolves hunt in packs of four to twelve individuals, utilizing pack tactics that have changed little since the pre-war era: encirclement, coordinated harassment, and separation of targets from the herd. A wolf pack will attempt to isolate a single target, drawing it away from companions before the pack converges. Their howls serve both as communication between pack members and, for wasteland travelers, as one of the most psychologically affecting audio cues that danger is near.

Wolf meat is edible, described as gamey and tough, and their pelts can be tanned for rudimentary clothing and bedding — though the quality varies considerably based on the condition of the hide. Wolf packs are most common in northern regions, mountainous terrain, and forested areas. The White Wolf variant, distinguished by its near-albino coloration and increased size, is known to lead larger-than-average packs. In the Commonwealth and Appalachia, wolf populations appear to have interbred with feral canines, producing intermediate variants that blend wolf pack tactics with mongrel scavenging behavior.
