The Enlightened (Mothman Cult)

Factions & Armies · Source: Fallout 76 (2018)

Overview

The Enlightened — more commonly known as the Mothman Cult — are the mystic worshippers of Appalachia's Mothman, a strange religious movement centered on Point Pleasant that reads the creature's appearances as prophecy.

History & Background

Legends of the Mothman haunted West Virginia even before the bombs, and the Great War proved the believers right: the creature returned, a winged omen in the poisoned hills. After the war, cultists gathered at Point Pleasant to study the Mothman's appearances, seeking enlightenment in its silent vigil and warning of the doom it foretells.

Details & Timeline

2102: the cult operates openly around Point Pleasant, conducting rituals, collecting artifacts, and ambushing outsiders who stray too close. The Mothman appears at the cult's sacred sites, and its appearances — celebrated in events like the Mothman Equinox — are read as signs of what is to come. Some cultists go further, serving darker entities in the wastes, but the core faithful simply wait for the Mothman's message.

Wasteland Significance

The Mothman cult is Appalachia's most enduring religion, proof that the wasteland's terrors breed belief as readily as despair. Its prophecies and rituals make it a recurring threat and curiosity for the region's settlers, and its strange faith has outlived the nations that once ruled the land.
