Bloatfly

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4

Bloatflies are grotesque, oversized mutated blowflies that infest the wasteland skies. Descended from pre-war Calliphoridae (blowfly) species, these creatures experienced dramatic gigantism from ambient radiation, growing to wingspans of two to three feet. Their most distinctive feature is their engorged, translucent abdomen, through which internal organs and gestating larvae are often visible.

Bloatflies attack by launching parasitic larvae at targets from a distance using a specialized biological propulsion mechanism — essentially spitting maggots with enough force to cause injury. These larval projectiles can burrow into flesh, causing parasitic infection if not promptly treated. The adult bloatfly itself is fragile and easily dispatched, but their aerial mobility and ranged attack make them persistent annoyances throughout the wastelands.

Bloatfly meat is considered barely edible, though desperate wastelanders have been known to harvest their glands for rudimentary medicinal compounds. Their larvae, when properly sterilized, can serve as a protein source. Bloatflies are found across the continental United States, with particularly dense populations in the Capital Wasteland, the Commonwealth, and the Mojave Desert.
