Overview
Vault 13 is the home vault of the Vault Dweller, the protagonist of Fallout. Built as a control vault, it sealed itself for a planned 200 years of isolation beneath the California desert.
History & Background
On December 13, 2161, the vault's water chip failed, and the Overseer, Jacoren, dispatched the Vault Dweller into the wastes to find a replacement. The journey exposed the dweller to the Master's super mutants, who were hunting vaults for their pure-strain humans. After the Master's defeat, the dweller's return was refused — the Overseer exiled him for the contamination of his journey, a bitter ending that defined the series' tone.
Geography & Layout
Vault 13 is a classic underground vault: dormitories, a central cavern, the water purifier, and a reactor, all beneath a hidden mountain entrance. Its layout became the template for vaults across the series.
Wasteland Significance
Vault 13 is the origin point of the entire Fallout franchise, establishing the vault-dweller archetype, the importance of the GECK, and the recurring theme of the wasteland's cost.
Notable Appearances
Fallout (1997); Vault 13's later fate is shown in Fallout 2 (2241), where the Enclave captures its inhabitants.
