Troglodyte Degeneration Contagion (TDC)

Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout 3 The Pitt DLC in-game lore and terminal entries

Overview

The Troglodyte Degeneration Contagion, or TDC, is a disease that transforms humans into trogs: blind, clawed, aggressive mutants. It is endemic to The Pitt, a post-war industrial hellscape. The disease is both a product of the environment and a defining feature of Pitt society.

Origin & Mechanism

TDC is spread through the contaminated air, water, and environment of The Pitt, particularly around the region's toxic steel mill. The contagion attacks the skin and nervous system, progressing over time. Prolonged exposure, especially among slaves forced to work in the mill, accelerates the transformation.

Effects & Symptoms

Infected individuals lose their skin in patches, develop elongated claws and enlarged features, and gradually go blind. Intelligence and memory deteriorate as victims become feral, aggressive trogs. The transformation is considered irreversible, though some hold out hope for a cure.

Wasteland Significance

TDC defines The Pitt's brutal slave economy, where raiders trade slaves doomed to become trogs for steel. The disease was central to Wernher's rebellion and the search for a cure. Trogs themselves became a feared creature of the region.

Notable Appearances

TDC and trogs appear in Fallout 3's The Pitt DLC. The disease's lore is expanded through The Pitt's terminal entries and slave narratives.
