Giant Ant

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas

Giant ants are mutated formicidae that have grown to the size of large dogs, with some queen specimens exceeding the mass of a human being. Unlike many wasteland creatures that are solitary or found in small groups, giant ants retain their pre-war eusocial structure, constructing elaborate underground colonies with specialized castes including workers, soldiers, and queens.

Exposure to radiation following the Great War triggered extreme gigantism in ant populations across the continental United States. Worker ants — the most commonly encountered caste — are roughly three to four feet in length, with powerful mandibles capable of inflicting serious lacerations. Soldier ants are larger and more aggressive, with proportionally oversized heads and mandibles designed for colony defense. The queen ant, found deep within the nest, can exceed ten feet in length and produces a constant supply of eggs.

Giant ant nests are often found beneath ruined urban structures, in caves, and in areas with loose, sandy soil. Ant meat, when cooked, is edible and surprisingly nutritious, described by some wasteland gourmands as having a poultry-like taste. Giant ants were first documented in Shady Sands and the surrounding New California region, but populations exist across the continent. The Fire Ant variant, found in the Capital Wasteland, exhibits an additional mutation: the ability to project streams of flammable venom.
