Super Mutant Creation Process
Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout series in-game lore, Mariposa and Vault 87 records
Overview
The super mutant creation process transforms humans into powerful, mutated giants through exposure to FEV. The process has been performed by the Master, the Enclave, Vault 87's automated systems, and the Institute. Its results vary from near-human intelligence to mindless savagery.
Origin & Mechanism
The process began at West Tek's Mariposa facility, where FEV escaped containment and mutated survivors; the Master later refined mass conversion using dipping vats. East Coast super mutants were created through Vault 87's FEV experimentation and the Institute's later work. The process typically involves submersion in or injection of FEV, followed by a dramatic physical transformation.
Effects & Symptoms
Subjects grow to towering size with massive musculature, green or mottled skin, and greatly increased strength and radiation resistance. Intelligence varies wildly by strain, with some super mutants retaining complex thought and others reduced to bestial grunts. All super mutants are sterile, and the transformation is irreversible, though exceptions like Virgil's serum exist.
Wasteland Significance
Super mutants are a major post-war faction, from the Master's army and the East Coast Brotherhood conflict to independent tribes like Jacobstown. Their aggression and strength make them both feared enemies and occasional allies. Their existence demonstrates the scale of pre-war biological ambition.
Notable Appearances
Super mutants appear in every mainline Fallout game, from the Master's Cathedral to Vault 87, the Commonwealth's mutant patrols, and Appalachia. Notable individuals like Strong, Fawkes, and Marcus show the range of mutant personalities.
