Fire Ant

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 3

Fire ants represent a specialized and considerably more dangerous mutation of the common giant ant, distinguished primarily by their ability to project a flammable venomous spray from their abdomens. First documented in the Capital Wasteland near the Grayditch settlement around 2277, these creatures devastated local populations and forced the abandonment of entire communities.

Unlike standard giant ants, fire ants possess a unique biological mechanism that allows them to mix volatile compounds internally and expel them as an ignited stream over distances of up to twenty feet. This attack bypasses conventional armor through a combination of thermal and corrosive damage. The ants themselves are partially resistant to fire and heat, making flame-based weapons — normally excellent for insect extermination — less effective against them.

Fire ants maintain the same eusocial structure as standard giant ants, with workers, soldiers, and queens. The fire ant queen in the Grayditch colony was considerably larger than standard ant queens and displayed enhanced fire-projection capabilities. Research suggests the fire ant mutation may have been triggered or accelerated by Dr. Lesko, a rogue scientist conducting experiments on giant ant populations in the Grayditch area, though the timeline and causality remain contested.
