Mutant Hound

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4

Mutant hounds are grotesque canines found in close association with Super Mutants, particularly in the Commonwealth region. Unlike mongrels — which are simply feral, irradiated descendants of domestic dogs — mutant hounds appear to be the result of deliberate FEV experimentation on canine stock, or possibly canines that were exposed to FEV incidentally while being kept by Super Mutant tribes.

A mutant hound's body is a study in anatomical wrongness: mottled, tumorous flesh stretched over a distorted canine frame, with exposed muscle tissue and bone spurs protruding through patchy, furless hide. Their jaws are disproportionately large, filled with malformed teeth, and capable of delivering crushing bites. Despite their brutish appearance, mutant hounds demonstrate a level of coordination with their Super Mutant masters that suggests either genetic programming, behavioral conditioning, or both.

Mutant hounds function as scouts, trackers, and shock troops for Super Mutant war parties, using their speed and senses to locate prey and run down fleeing targets. When encountered alongside Super Mutants, tactical doctrine dictates eliminating the hounds first: they are faster and can close distance rapidly, pinning targets for the slower, heavier-hitting mutants. Mutant hound meat is universally described as inedible, carrying a chemical taint consistent with FEV contamination.
