Nightkin

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas

Nightkin are a distinct and tragic subset of Super Mutants, distinguished by their blue-gray skin pigmentation, their extensive use of Stealth Boy technology, and their disproportionately high rates of severe mental illness. They originated from The Master's army at the Mariposa Military Base and represent some of the most elite and dangerous warriors of the Super Mutant forces — and, paradoxically, some of the most pitiable.

The Nightkin condition results from prolonged, near-continuous use of Stealth Boy personal cloaking devices. While the Stealth Boy's stealth field provided a decisive tactical advantage — allowing Nightkin to approach and eliminate targets while invisible — the technology came with a devastating neurological cost. Extended exposure to Stealth Boy radiation induces a progressive schizophrenia-like condition, characterized by paranoid delusions, auditory and visual hallucinations, dissociative episodes, and violent outbursts. Pre-war Stealth Boy documentation warned against extended use; Super Mutant physiology slowed but did not eliminate the neurological degradation.

Physically, Nightkin are Super Mutants of above-average size and strength, their skin having taken on a blue or purple-gray hue either from the Stealth Boy radiation, specific FEV strain characteristics, or a combination of both. In combat, they utilize their Stealth Boys to become effectively invisible, closing distance before attacking with heavy melee weapons or automatic firearms. Nightkin leadership — particularly those like Tabitha in the Mojave who retained sufficient cognitive function to maintain command structures — can organize Nightkin into effective, if erratic, military units.

Following The Master's defeat in 2162, most surviving Nightkin scattered across the wastes, many descending further into mental illness without the unifying purpose The Master provided. Some found new leaders; others became solitary threats haunting remote locations, their Stealth Boys failing, their minds unraveling, but their physical lethality undiminished.
