Gecko

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas

Geckos are mutated reptiles common to the Southwestern wastelands, particularly the Mojave Desert and New California regions. Descended from pre-war gecko species (likely the common house gecko and related Gekkonidae), these creatures have undergone significant hypertrophy, with adults reaching three to four feet in length and adopting a partially bipedal posture for locomotion and combat.

Geckos are characterized by their mottled green-brown or orange-brown scaly hide, large eyes with vertical slit pupils adapted for both day and night hunting, and distinctive vocalizations — a chittering, barking sound that can carry surprising distance across open desert. They are typically encountered in small groups, using pack tactics to harry and overwhelm prey. Their primary attacks are biting, clawing, and — in some variants — a leaping pounce that can knock down human-sized targets.

Several gecko variants exist: the common gecko is the baseline; the Golden Gecko possesses a distinctive golden coloration and enhanced ability to sense vibrations through the ground, making stealth approaches difficult; the Fire Gecko can exhale small gouts of flame, a metabolic ability whose origin is unclear but which makes them significantly more dangerous than their common cousins. Gecko hides are valued for tanning into durable, lightweight leather — Golden Gecko hide in particular is prized for its distinctive color. Gecko meat, described as having a texture similar to chicken or reptile, is a staple protein source for many Mojave communities.

Geckos came into conflict with human settlements early in the post-war period, particularly around Shady Sands and the growing NCR territories. While individually not a match for an armed adult, gecko packs can overwhelm isolated travelers and have been known to raid the outskirts of settlements.
