The Boneyard

Overview
The Boneyard is the ruined sprawl of Los Angeles, California, featured in Fallout. It is a lawless region of collapsed freeways, scavenger gangs, and hidden sanctuaries of knowledge and power.
History & Background
Los Angeles was devastated in the Great War, and the Boneyard grew over decades into a patchwork of settlements and factions. The Followers of the Apocalypse preserve pre-war knowledge in their library, the Gun Runners manufacture weapons for sale, and the Children of the Cathedral secretly harbor the Master's plans beneath their church. In 2161 the Vault Dweller journeys here to find a replacement water chip and to confront the growing mutant threat.
Geography & Layout
The Boneyard is defined by its ruined freeway overpasses, the Dayglow district, the fortified town of Adytum, and the sprawling cemetery-like ruins that give the region its name. Trade routes connect it to the Hub and the rest of the wasteland.
Wasteland Significance
The Boneyard introduces several of the series' most enduring institutions — the Followers of the Apocalypse and the Gun Runners — and is the site of the Master's Cathedral, making it pivotal to Fallout's climax.
Notable Appearances
Fallout (1997); the Followers and Gun Runners return in later games.
